Service Learning: An Overview
DESCRIPTION: A multimedia-based introduction to service-learningdesigned to create common language and understanding around the use of service-learning as a teaching strategy. From theory to action, this workshop includes curriculum and program examples developed by teachers in the field. Ideal for beginners, but may also be useful to more experienced practitioners as a way to talk about service-learning within their own institution.

Civics Through Service-Learning: Citizen Participation Across Disciplines
DESCRIPTION: Education affords us the opportunity to make a difference in this world and to learn how to be a participatory citizen. This workshop explores the meaning of educationto better our lives and the lives of others. As Socrates once said, Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel. Together we will discover new ways to use Service-Learning so that what we teach, and how we teach it, helps our students to discover who they are as they forge an identity through their relationships within their community. Jean will share working examples of his curriculum.

Creating a Social Justice Curriculum: Service-Learning, Civic Engagement, and Community Organizing
DESCRIPTION: This workshop presents a spectrum of community-based learning and challenges participants to think through the politics of their positions as teachers, students, and citizens in their own particular communities. Participants will be asked to map out the matrix of social and political relationships they experience and brainstorm ways in which they might create community-based projects that not only provide service and research, but build communities of commitment for social justice.

Site-Level Best Practice for Service-Learning
DESCRIPTION: A practical look at the Site Level Best Practices for Service-Learning with a veteran administrator. Martha is head of school at Thetford Academy where she has helped teachers and students become deeply engaged in service-learning for more than a decade. She offers her own insights and explores practical needs and considerations encountered on the road to institutionalizing service-learning.

Making Reflection Journals

DESCRIPTION: In this fun hands-on workshop, well explore several easy-to-make book forms and how to use them for reflection activities such as writing journal entries and poetry, drawing, and collecting photographs and artifacts. These books can be created quickly with commonly available materials, yet they are pleasing to look at and hold. When students create their own books, it gives them a sense of pride and engagement. This is an activity that students (and teachers!) of all skill levels can complete successfullyno previous experience is necessary. [Click image for a closer look]
Building for the Future in the Mississippi Delta
Learn about work of the Center for Community and Civic Engagement at the University of Southern Mississippi and the Lighthouse Partnership. Colleges and Universities taking part in this Partnership include Delta State University, the University of Southern MS, East Central Community College, Rust College, and Tougaloo College. Each of the partners mission is to institutionalize service learning on their campuses and provide after-school opportunities with a service-learning focus for K-12 students.
Delta State runs its Lighthouse Partnership Program in partnership with a local middle school. Students meet with Lighthouse staff and college Service-Learning volunteers four afternoons a week for cultural education specific to the unique Delta environment, for tutoring and mentoring, for field trips and service opportunities geared towards the middle-schoolers' interests and needs, and for creative/arts projects and instruction. Each semester culminates in a show of the students' work and a reception to honor all those involved in the Program.

What activities kindle their desire to plunge beneath the surface, to dig deeper, to make a personal commitment to serving their community? Explore strategies that work and ideas that allow students to be empowered, to feel the impact of their own voices through their participation.

Service-Learning and Assessment
DESCRIPTION: Assessment is about observing how our students are doing and providing feedback and support so that they can do better. Involving students in the assessment process helps them understand how and why they learn. In this workshop, we’ll look at some techniques for aligning assessment with learning goals in service-learning practice, including deepening the connection between journal writing and service and aligning curricular goals with service and assessment using Connecting Service-Learning to the Curriculum. This workshop begins with a quick resource review. We then look at some powerful assessment models collected by a national study group on service-learning and assessment. The workshop concludes with a lively discussion of how assessing what students learn through service fits into the larger goals of education for Sustainability, and how the reason for learning becomes a powerful motivator for student achievement. We encourage you to bring your questions and dilemmas about assessment for group discussion.

Folksongs and Solidarity:
Creating A Commonwealth of Toil
A Singing Lecture by Corey Dolgon
Folksinger and Sociologist
An interactive singing lecture on the role of folksongs in building a sense of common purpose. Coery is a long-time labor activist and community organizer and has used folk songs to build solidarity on the line and engage students in the classroom. This singing lecture makes connections between service-learning projects and the role of song in labor history, from a multicultural perspective. Coery will also examine the function of folk songs in workers’ lives, labor, and organizing.
There will be a focus on the functions that these songs have had for describing people's conditions and articulating their issues; defining their particular identities while broadening their solidarities. The lecture includes songs from a variety of workplaces , cultural heritages, and social movements. But most of all, Creating a Commonwealth of Toil brings to life the ways in which folk songs helped individuals give voice to their hopes, their fears, their struggles, and their dreams of a better world to come.
The Student Made Film
Vermont Stories of Modern America
Vermont Stories of Modern America is a student-produced video by Harwood Union High School U.S. History students with the technical assistance and support of Vince Franke of Peregrine Productions (2006). The study of history is too often for trivial gain. This project seeks to help students and their communities gain a better perspective on the importance of history for all citizens. Students in 3 U.S. History classes collected oral histories from Vermonters who had experiences in defining eras of Modern America. Students related their studies of WWII, the Cold War, the Korean War, the Red Scare, Vietnam, the Counter Culture Movement, Space Race, and the Civil Rights Movement to the personal stories of Vermonters.
This student-produced documentary is a fine example of Service-Learning. In obtaining the oral histories of Vermonters students have provided us all with an invaluable service. They have preserved the experiences of our neighbors so that history is not only better understood and appreciated, but serves to help us better understand ourselves today so that we can have a more promising future.

Reflection: An Essential Ingredient for Learning
DESCRIPTION: Take a look at how reflection can become the guiding force behind service-learning and how it deepens understanding. Learn and practice a variety of strategies and techniques with veteran service-learning practitioners. Discover the three levels of reflection: the mirror, the microscope, and the binoculars. Discuss spiral reflection. Engage in the popcorn method, a refection collage, image journaling, and scrapbook documentation.

School Gardening from a Service-Learning Perspective
DESCRIPTION: Across the country, thousands of schools have evolved their own unique forms of gardening projects. From bean seeds planted in cups on classroom windowsills to elaborate outdoor nature centers, gardening has many benefits when thoughtfully integrated into the school curriculum. In this interactive workshop, we'll explore dynamic images of school gardening and discuss ways in which service-learning can be used to address the challenges of planning and sustaining a school garden program.

Collaboration
DESCRIPTION: Collaboration is an integral aspect of the entire service-learning process as students, educators, community members and recipients of service to work together towards mutually identified goals. This workshop focuses on the levels of collaboration and strategies for identifying potential collaborators. Workshop participants will also identify potential barriers to the collaborative process along with strategies for addressing them, and have the opportunity to give each other feedback on this facet of their planning.

Connecting Students to their Future Through Service-Learning
DESCRIPTION: Sustainability provides an integrative concept for service-learning that helps build participants' skills, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs with the goal of creating a better future. Embedded in education for sustainability is a process that is integrative and participatory and that uses long-term thinking to meet curriculum and service goals similar to the best practices of service-learning. In this workshop we will explore this integrative process and how it can deeply enrich service-learning experiences for both teachers and students.

Encountering Sustainability:
a Field Trip at Shelburne Farms
DESCRIPTION: This hands-on field trip will serve as the backdrop for beginning your own investigation into the relationship between service-learning and Sustainability. In the simplest terms, Sustainability is "meeting the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to do so." With the goals of Sustainability as a motivating force, service-learning provides an ideal strategy for students to become invested in caring for their own communities. During the field trip we will delve into Sustainability's "3 E's" (Environmental Integrity, Economic Vitality, and Social Equity) in a variety of ways. This field trip will help participants begin the Institute with an understanding of the connection between service-learning, Sustainability, and education.
