Publishing for the Community with Students
Publishing with students offers unique rewards.
The sense of accomplishment and purpose is real and ready to be made available for beyond the classroom benefit.
Once a publication process is set in place in the classroom or school, students can become the trainers and mentors of succeeding classes who will carry on the work.
We have worked with many schools over the years, providing support for student publications. We have particular interest and expertise in student produced community newspapers, which can serve as a powerful vehicle for student learning, meeting real needs in the community and improving schools' relationships with their local community.
We offer practical support and guidance to teachers who are considering embarking on publishing ventures with their students including:
Involving students in the planning process
Setting up a purpose and defining the audience and timeline
Outlining scope and sequence for the publication
Involving community partners and local expertise
Simple public distribution methods
Making use of labor saving-quality enhancing digital output opportunities.
We share first hand experience, gleaned from long term involvement in with several community newspapers produced by students, teachers and community members.
